Kansas City, MO — The Health Forward Foundation (Health Forward) has awarded nine nonprofit organizations a total of $450,532 in February Applicant Defined Grants (ADG).

In February, Health Forward reviewed 21 ADG proposals totaling more than $1.4 million in requests.

The following grants were awarded in February 2017:

Agency Award Amount Project Description
Cancer Action $65,000 To provide services and support to cancer patients and their families in the Kansas City area.
Central Avenue Betterment Association $40,000 To support bike education programs — Let’s Get Rolling and Bike Club — and community engagement projects. These programs teach safe biking practices, distribute free helmets and bicycles, and work within the community to promote healthy, long-term behaviors.
Comprehensive Mental Health Services $50,000 To support a health information administrator and a network switch upgrade that will improve the efficiency and quality of data collection through a electronic health records system and will ensure the agency is performing according to Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic standards.
Developing Potential $58,032 To support a full-time nurse to address the medical needs of adults with developmental disabilities.
Hope Family Care Center $40,000 To support clinical staffing and capacity building for an after-hours clinic that provides services to low-income individuals.
Recreation Council of Greater Kansas City $50,000 To build a field designed specifically for wheelchair athletes in a variety of sports so persons with disabilities can once again engage in the lifelong pursuit of outdoors sports.
UMKC Foundation $37,500 To provide critical, quality medical care to an indigent population in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
Maternal and Child Health Coalition of Greater Kansas City $40,000 To use collective impact to improve breastfeeding rates in the metropolitan area, specifically in lower-income ZIP codes of the Kansas City region, by engaging partners through the Metro KC Breastfeeding Collaborative.
Seton Center Family & Health Services $70,000 To provide partial salary support of a dentist and hygienist who will provide dental services to low-income patients and for the purchase of dental equipment for oral cancer screenings and dental supplies.

Health Forward Applicant Defined Grants (ADG) are awarded outside of the Foundation’s annual Requests for Proposals. ADGs are reviewed and awarded monthly and allow organizations to define their own immediate grant needs in relation to the Health Forward mission. Organizations are allowed to apply for an ADG once per year and are capped at $75,000. In 2017, Health Forward will award approximately $4.085 million in ADGs.

“We are proud to support the work these organizations are doing to remove barriers to health care for the most vulnerable populations in our service area,” said Bridget McCandless, M.D., Health Forward President/CEO.
