KANSAS CITY, MO – The Health Forward Foundation (Health Forward) approved $816,850 in applicant defined grants to support organizations who strive to eliminate barriers to quality health and promote healthy lifestyles.

Health Forward awarded the following grants:

$75,000 to Samuel Rodgers Health Center to hire a Quality Management Director to oversee a Joint Commission Preparation and Accreditation process.
$70,000 to Hope House to assist with salaries for staff for the Guardian Program, a supervised visitation center where custodial parents can safely exchange children for visitation with their non-custodial parents.
$66,755 to Heart to Heart International to support the development and implementation of a Kansas City Health Care Development Program to leverage the ability to receive donated product and increase the capacity of area safety new clinics.
$65,104 to Crittenton Children’s Center for the Head Start Resiliency Project, which provides early intervention for young children with mental health needs.
$53,900 to the Family Conservancy to provide prenatal classes, assistance in securing health insurance, referrals, transportation, child care, expectant father education and infant care courses for residents of the Juniper Gardens public housing project.
$53,691 to the Virginia Brown Community Orthodontic Partnership to provide orthodontic treatment for 10 children and for technological upgrades.
$50,000 to Calvary Community Outreach Network for Taking it to the Pews – Youth PROMISE , a faith-based program that relies on role-model stories to promote abstinence and safer sex.
$50,000 to Partners in Public Health for Clean Air Kansas City, to support their promotion of smoke-free workplaces and public places throughout the Health Forward service area.
$50,000 to Reconciliation Services for a capacity building grant that increases the organizational and technological capacity to enhance the delivery of substance and mental health services.
$50,000 to the Research Belton Foundation to expand the Dental Care for Children program and fund expenses of paying for dental services for indigent children in Cass County.
$45,000 to Cancer Action for its Patient Services Program to be used for medical supplies for those battling cancer.
$43,750 to Truman Medical Centers for a nursing professional certification program to enhance patient care outcomes and delivery of care and services.
$39,000 to the Kansas Health Consumer Coalition to expand the number and activity of citizens of Allen, Johnson and Wyandotte counties organized around health reform issues.
$30,000 to the City of Olathe for its Taxi Coupon Program to provide 9.600 medical trips for Olathe’s aging 60+ population with a documented disability or that are considered low income.
$25,000 to the Metropolitan Community College Foundation for its YouthSpace healthy lifestyle promotion effort during out-of-school time for at risk youth at Westport High School.
$20,000 to the City of Independence Health Department, Centerpoint Medical Center, the University of Missouri Extension and Hy-Vee to support tobacco cessation programming, including health screenings for women in Independence.
$17,650 to SAFEHOME to provide primary medical care for domestic violence victims and their children.
$12,000 to the Coterie for its Dramatic AIDS Education Project (DAEP), a unique AIDS and STD prevention program.
In 2009, Health Forward will fund a total of $4 million in Applicant Defined Grants (ADG). Proposals are accepted and reviewed monthly. This month, Health Forward received 28 requests totaling over $1.4 million in grants.
