Last week, both the United States Supreme Court and the Missouri Supreme Court stood firm in their protection of the rights afforded Missourians through the Constitution to citizen referendum. We can now say with confidence: the 2022 congressional map will govern Missouri’s November general election.
On September 3, the Missouri Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the legislature’s 2025 redrawn map was never lawfully in effect, restored the 2022 map, and confirmed voters will decide its fate through Proposition A this November. Days later, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to disturb that ruling, rejecting an emergency bid to revive the Republican-drawn map. Missouri’s Secretary of State has since complied with the courts’ orders and directed local election authorities to use the 2022 map. Despite an ongoing Eighth Circuit appeal, Missouri voters should feel confident these are the maps they’ll see on their ballots this fall.
We commend the Missouri Supreme Court for its careful, unanimous judgment upholding the rule of law and Missourians’ constitutional right to referendum.
This outcome exists because of sustained organizing by everyday Missourians. Over 305,000 voters — from every corner of the state, across party lines, from every walk of life — came together as people, not politicians, and spent more than a year gathering signatures, filing suit, and refusing to back down under pressure from politicians in Jefferson City and Washington. Their persistence won this fight. But the work isn’t done.
Health Forward Foundation urges Missouri voters to VOTE NO on Proposition A this November. A “no” vote rejects the legislature’s attempt to redraw district lines along the same racial lines that have divided Kansas City before. We cannot stand to allow history to repeat itself by letting politicians dilute Kansas City voters’ power and distort representation in surrounding rural districts.
The courts have done their part. Health Forward, the People Not Politicians campaign, and partners around the state have worked tirelessly for over a year to get us this far. Now, success is up to Missouri voters. In the weeks ahead, we’ll keep working to make sure Missourians have what they need to vote NO on Proposition A — and protect their power to advocate for the health of their own communities, and the resources and representation necessary to achieve it.
