The first round of Health Forward’s Health Madness ended at noon on Sunday, March 24, a precursor to a memorable afternoon of NCAA Tournament basketball, with teams punching their tickets to the Sweet Sixteen.
The fans have spoken! We’ve had time to tally your votes and declare which strategies moved on to the second round. We don’t envy you, there were some tough matches, and all the strategies are deserving of a win. The voting only gets more difficult from here.
Some of the matchups were close. Patient-centered medical homes squeaked past PTO for preventive screenings at the buzzer. Other strategies, such as Smoke-free bars and restaurants and Essential oral health benefits, were clear favorites.
Highlights by division
Children fared well with the Health Madness voters in the Healthy Eating, Active Living division, with healthy school lunches, physical activity and safe walk/bike to school easily advancing to round two.
Fans voted with their teeth in the Physical and Oral Health division. Medicaid dental benefits and Essential oral health benefits comfortably moved on to the next round.
Early detection and access were the story of the Mental Health Division, as almost all the favored strategies have a connection to detection and care for mental illness. Integrate health/mental health was the fans’ darling of this division.
And finally, in the Tobacco Use division, the law reigned supreme, with voters supporting Smoke-free bars and restaurants, the Tobacco Control Act, Penalize underage sales, and Tobacco regulation.
