Date: March 27, 2014 Contact: Jennifer Sykes Phone: 816-241-7006 KANSAS CITY, MO – The Health Forward Foundation (Health Forward) has awarded 13 nonprofit organizations a total of $727,276 in Applicant Defined Grants.
The following grants were awarded in January and February 2014:
Agency Amount Awarded Project Description Cancer Action Inc $75,000 To provide vital patient services, guidance, emotional support and education to cancer patients and their families living in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Child Abuse Prevention Association $65,000 To support therapists, case managers and bilingual staff who will provide trauma-focused mental health services to child victims of abuse and their non-offending family members; prevention-focused, in-home case management services to families at risk of child maltreatment; crisis assistance; and Spanish-speaking services in Jackson County. COVERSA $25,000 To support operational expenses, planning toward long-term sustainability, and program expansion through contracted on-call positions. Cultivate KC, Inc. $44,710 To support organizational development that increases Cultivate’s capacity to effect change in the metropolitan food system through planning, evaluation and program development. Developing Potential, Inc. $53,066 To support a full-time nurse to support adults with developmental disabilities who have complex medical needs. Health Partnership of Johnson County $75,000 To expand dental outreach services for low-income/underserved youth. Kansas City CARE Clinic $75,000 To support staff in the finance and development departments of the Kansas City CARE Clinic during a period of transformation within the health care industry and, correspondingly, at the Kansas City CARE Clinic. Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault $50,000 To support the continuation of activities designed to ensure victims’ access to 24-hour crisis intervention and advocacy services. Pets For Life, Inc. $7,500 To serve more individuals at more facilities with animal-assisted therapy SAFEHOME, Inc. $75,000 To provide no-cost, expert services for children traumatized by domestic violence. Secondary Trauma Resource Center $75,000 To support operational costs of providing secondary trauma training and consultation to social service agencies that face a high risk of employee burnout and vicarious traumatization. Sunflower House, Inc. $42,000 To partially support the salaries of three Child Assessment Program staff: the receptionist, grants manager, and president and CEO. University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, Inc. $65,000 To support the Healthy Hawks program being delivered directly at the Turner House Children’s Clinic and the Bethany Community Center. Health Forward Applicant Defined Grants are awarded outside of the Foundation’s annual Requests for Proposals. The ADGs are reviewed monthly and allow organizations to define their own immediate grant needs in relation to the Health Forward mission. Organizations are allowed to apply for an ADG once per year and are capped at $75,000. In 2014, Health Forward will award a total of $4 million in Applicant Defined Grants.
