Health Forward Awards $611,815 in Applicant Defined Grants

KANSAS CITY, MO – The Health Forward Foundation (Health Forward) approved $611,815 in applicant defined grants at its March board meeting to support organizations who strive to eliminate barriers to quality health care and promote healthy lifestyles.

Health Forward awarded the following grants:

$75,000 to Kansas City Public Television (KCPT) for Generation XL, a series of discussions on children’s fitness and nutrition on its Public Community Affairs Program.
$75,000 to the Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City for medical rehabilitation services for children and adults who have experienced a serious illness or injury to help them regain lost abilities or learn new skills to regain their level of independence.
$75,000 to Northland Health Care Access to deliver health care services to children and families enrolled in the North Kansas City School District via the Crestview School-Based clinics.
$75,000 to The Plaza Academy to fund a Clinical Director to provide mental health services.
$74,750 to Community Support Services (CSS) – Greater Kansas City for First Steps, which provides support services to children with disabilities.
$52,000 to the Kansas University Endowment Association for the JayDoc Free Clinic, which provides urgent and preventive care through student volunteers.
$50,000 to the Missouri Coalition for Budget and Policy to support its work to improve public policies and awareness about issues involving the uninsured and underserved.
$49,932 to the Mid-America Regional Council Community Services Corporation, Mid-America Head Start, Children’s Mercy Hospital and the Kansas City, MO Police Department for Safe Travel – Buckle Up KC KIDS, a pilot program to reduce the number of unrestrained or improperly restrained Head Start child passengers.
$38,500 to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Greater Kansas City and the Resource Development Institute for CIT Program training to prepare officers to respond appropriately to jail incidents involving inmates with mental illness
$21,483 to SAFEHOME to provide on-site primary medical care to victims of domestic violence and their children.
$12,500 to Education First, Athletics Second Coalition to provide nutrition and fitness program to youth between the ages of 8 and 18.
$7,500 to Pets for Life for volunteer recruitment and project expansion.
$5,150 to the Kansas City Academy for Healthy Foods for Healthy Lives to develop a Free Fruit Kiosk that will make fresh fruit available year-round.
In 2008, Health Forward will fund a total of $4 million in Applicant Defined Grants (ADG). Proposals are accepted and reviewed on a regular basis throughout the year. Organizations are allowed to submit one applicant-defined proposal per calendar year. The maximum amount that can be requested is $75,000.
