A Millenial’s Experience with the Health Insurance Marketplace

I just enrolled for a new insurance policy through the Health Insurance Marketplace. The process was quick and easy, and I ended up with a plan that’s better than my current one!

As a freelance web designer, I have carried my own insurance for more than a year, but it’s not a great plan. It’s one of those ‘catastrophic’ plans, whose premium is low but the deductible is high.

Last week, I went to the doctor. My doctor. The primary care physician who delivered me as a newborn baby, and whom I’ve been seeing regularly for the 27 years since then. I discovered that this whole office was “out-of-network” with my old insurance. That meant, I was paying out-of-pocket for my visit. Oh, great! So, since then, I’ve been eager to suss out my options for health insurance.

Thanks to an email forward from my mom, I finally went to healthcare.gov and signed up. The website is actually pretty fun to use — who doesn’t love clicking a bunch of big, colorful buttons?

Parts of it can be confusing, but there are lots of little helpful hints throughout the site. The coolest part was discovering that I’m eligible for a $95 monthly tax credit to help cover premiums, which will be ‘paid’ in advance, on my behalf. So, I’m able to get a better plan than I would with only my own budget. Sweet deal.

I encourage you to check out the site; you might find a good plan. And, if you sign up before March 31, you can still get new coverage this year.
